Australia Post loss another death-knell for essential services – Pearls and Irritations

Australia Post Delivery Truck.

Australia Post has been challenged by technology. Yes, however as obviously in the same way as the ABC and SBS have by the previous LNP government. Privatization for Rupert Murdoch’s quid pro quo mutual interest has been a clear intent. The ABC is the most essential National Service more so than the Australia Post. It protects our Democracy.

Morrison certainly kneecapped and trashed Aus Post when he rid it of Christine Holgate. He set it up to fail. The LNP has simply been following the Republican and Trump model of a privatized and politically biased Public service by staffing it with a politically biased hierarchy and privatizing as much of it as rapidly as possible. A privatized public service is by definition more ideologically sympathetic to the LNP and more easily manipulated than an independent one as we saw in the case of Robocop.

Australia Post’s $200.3 million loss for 2022-23 is only the second in its corporate history. It also confirms that, with Christine Holgate gone, Australia Post is once again being set up to fail to justify removing its community service obligation and possible privatisation.

Australia Post boss Lucio Di Bartolomeo defends $170,000 bonuses for highly paid staff

The five employees who received retention bonuses in 2020-21 were all male, with one working in the executive team while the other four were senior managers.

Morrison’s silence is thunderous in its absence and his hypocrisy blinding. But then he gets a woman to protect him,yet he doesn’t do the same for women. He’s “focused”. He was when he said Christina Holgate needed to be sacked for $20,000 bonuses. But he’s allowed the men at Australia Post to simply give him the finger

This marks a stark contrast with the $20,000 spent by former chief executive Christine Holgate on Cartier watches for four senior employees in 2018. Ms Holgate resigned in November 2020 as a result of the watch controversy, which was fuelled by Prime Minister Scott Morrison condemning her actions on the floor of the Parliament.

Australia Post has defended rewarding highly paid staff with bonuses averaging almost $170,000 last financial year, with five senior employees receiving additional sums to keep them from being poached by a competitor.

A Senate estimates committee on Tuesday heard one senior Australia Post staff member would receive a $500,000 “retention bonus”, to be paid over three years, on top of his salary and annual performance bonus.
