Melbourne’s Jewish Community is divided not everyone supports Israel and they suffer the consequences for coming out saying “Not in our name”. In Yiddish they are real Menschen and behave in a manner Judaism expects Menschliekeitn with Niceness, kindness, decency, and humaneness. They are, however, currently experiencing ignorance and chaos of not only growing anti-semitism but also being threatened shunned, and shamed by their own communities as traitors. These are people to be admired for the risks they take. They deserve a place on a Palestinian wall of the righteous and remembered.
Irreconcilable differences of opinion between Jews are widening, yet the broader Australian public could be forgiven for thinking that all Jews agree. This is in part because most so-called Jewish representative organizations in Australia refuse to represent this diversity of opinion between Jews and have become explicit Israel lobby groups.
The Israel lobby’s conflation of these types of incidents has meant that claims of antisemitism are being exploited to stifle legitimate criticism of Israel’s actions in the Gaza Strip and West Bank.
The history and concept of antisemitism risks becoming confused and devalued amid a very real fight worldwide against genuine anti-Jewish racism and an increase in fascist activity. It will lead to real instances of antisemitism being dismissed.
