The case for recognising Palestine – Pearls and Irritations

Al-Masara, Occupied Palestinian Territories - August 24, 2012: Italian solidarity activists join Palestinians confronting heavily armed Israeli soldiers in a weekly nonviolent demonstration against the separation barrier that would cut off the West Bank village of Al Ma'sara from its agricultural lands.

Since a United Nations General Assembly Resolution vote in November 2012, Palestine has had the status of a state within the UN system. It is not a full member state but, like the Holy See, a non-member observer state. Australia – after a heady debate within the Gillard cabinet – abstained on that vote.
