As the world becomes increasingly cognizant to the threat of religious extremism, the west is becoming less willing to accommodate religious commitment. In 1989, Indian-born philosopher Akeel Bilgrami penned ‘What is a Muslim?’ in response to the Rushdie fatwa. The essay has just been republished—and remains resoundingly pertinent today.
