A SYDNEY extremist identified as the latest Australian jihadist to be killed fighting for Islamic State’s terror army in Syria was last night being praised as a martyr by friends and supporters in Australia.
It is believed Ahmed Mohammed Al-Ghazzawi was killed by Syrian forces on Boxing Day, The Daily Telegraph reported.
Originally from Lebanon, Al-Ghazzawi lived in the Bankstown area before he travelled to join the brutal extremist fighters who have seized large swathes of northern Iraq and Syria in an increasingly bloody campaign to establish a caliphate.
Syrian news outlet Syria 24 reported the man’s death at the hands of the Syrian army on December 27, describing him as a “terrorist” with Islamic State.
He was last night praised as a martyr by friends and some supporters in Australia as well as abroad.
One distant relative told The Daily Telegraph word of his death had spread quickly among the community.
Sydney man and family friend Abo Elmineh wrote on Facebook: “Hero Ahmed Mohammed Ali Ghazzawi died in the land of the pure.”
